13: Stop Setting Resolutions, Start Setting SMARTEST Goals
Ditch Resolutions—Set SMARTER Goals for Real Growth
The new year rolls in, and suddenly, it’s all about resolutions. But let’s be real—how many times have we set a resolution only to forget about it by February? The problem isn’t with our ambition; it’s with the way we approach our goals. Instead of setting vague resolutions, it’s time to get strategic and set the SMARTER goals that actually stick.
In this episode, we’re breaking down how to move beyond the “New Year, New Me” mindset and start setting goals that truly align with your values, habits, and long-term success.
Why Resolutions Fail (and What to Do Instead)
Resolutions sound great in theory, but they often fall flat because they lack structure. Saying, “I want to get in shape” or “I’ll save more money” is too broad and doesn’t give you a clear plan to follow. That’s why setting SMARTER goals is a game-changer.
SMARTER goals go beyond the typical SMART framework (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) by adding two essential elements: Evaluated and Revised.
Specific – What exactly do you want to achieve?
Measurable – How will you track progress?
Achievable – Is this realistic based on your lifestyle?
Relevant – Does this goal align with your values and priorities?
Time-bound – What’s your deadline or timeline?
Evaluated – Regularly check in on your progress.
Revised – Adjust your approach when needed.
By incorporating evaluation and revision, your goals stay flexible and adaptable, because life happens, and we need to pivot sometimes!
How to Set SMARTER Goals That Stick
Start with Your “Why” – Before setting any goal, ask yourself why it matters to you. If your goal is to work out more, is it because you want to feel stronger, have more energy, or improve your mental health? Knowing your deeper motivation will help you stay committed when things get tough.
Break It Down – Big goals can feel overwhelming, which is why breaking them into smaller, actionable steps is key. Instead of “run a marathon,” start with “run three times a week for 30 minutes.”
Track Your Progress – Whether it’s using a journal, an app, or simply checking in with yourself weekly, tracking your progress keeps you accountable and motivated.
Adjust as Needed – Life throws curveballs. If your initial plan isn’t working, don’t give up—adjust it! Maybe that daily 5 a.m. workout isn’t realistic, but a lunchtime session is.
Celebrate Small Wins – Acknowledging your progress, no matter how small, builds momentum and keeps you motivated. Give yourself credit for showing up!
The Power of Habits Over Willpower
Willpower fades, but habits last. Instead of relying on sheer motivation (which we all know isn’t always there), focus on creating habits that support your goals.
For example:
If your goal is to eat healthier, set up your environment for success by prepping meals in advance.
If you want to move more, leave your workout clothes out as a reminder.
If better sleep is your goal, create a nighttime routine that signals your body it’s time to wind down.
Small, consistent actions add up to big results.
